Children often don’t realize they have a vision problem because they assume everyone sees the way they do. In fact, according to the Canadian Association of Optometrists, approximately 25% of school-aged children experience a vision problem, many of which can go unnoticed without a comprehensive eye exam.

When Should My Child
Have an Eye Exam?
Children’s eyes develop rapidly throughout childhood, making regular eye exams an important part of their healthcare.
The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends the following general schedule:
- Birth to 24 months: An initial eye exam on or before 9 months of age.
- Ages 2 to 4: At least one comprehensive eye exam before starting school.
- Ages 5 to 19: Annual comprehensive eye exams.
Some children may require more frequent visits depending on their visual development, family history, or existing eye conditions.
