Understanding Glaucoma
Glaucoma occurs when damage to the optic nerve affects how visual information is transmitted. In many cases, increased pressure inside the eye contributes to optic nerve damage, but glaucoma can also develop when eye pressure is within a normal range.

Types of Glaucoma

There are several different types of glaucoma, each with unique causes and characteristics.
Primary open-angle glaucoma is the most common form of glaucoma. It occurs when fluid does not drain properly from the eye, causing pressure inside the eye to increase.
Over time, increased intraocular pressure can damage the optic nerve and lead to gradual vision loss. This type of glaucoma typically develops slowly, which is why regular eye exams are important.
Angle-closure glaucoma is less common but can be much more serious. It occurs when the eye’s drainage angle becomes blocked, causing a rapid increase in intraocular pressure.
This is considered an eye emergency and requires immediate medical attention.
Secondary glaucoma develops as a result of another condition, injury, infection, tumour, certain medications, or other factors that increase pressure inside the eye.
Normal-tension glaucoma occurs when damage to the optic nerve develops despite normal eye pressure levels. This type of glaucoma may be related to increased sensitivity of the optic nerve, although the exact cause is not always known.
How Is Glaucoma Treated?
While glaucoma cannot currently be cured, treatment can help manage the condition and protect your remaining vision. Detecting glaucoma early allows treatment to begin sooner, which can improve the chances of slowing further damage.

- Prescription eye drops and medications
- Laser treatment
- Surgical procedures
